Emcore

Emcore

Emcores core business (opinion)
Emcores business is divided into two sectors. Fibre Optics and Solar Photovoltaics. Both sectors are experiencing growth and with Emcores acquisition of Intel's optical platform division on 12/17/2008 for $75M and $10M in stock, the optical division is expected to further increase Emcore's strength in this sector. Revenue for the September Quarter rose 33% year on year to $47M. With the Fibre optic division responsible for 11% of this increase. Emcore have indicated that the acquisition of Intels division is estimated to realise cost savings of $7M per year. This is not the division however where the most significant growth is expected. The Concentrated Photovoltaic division, which fits with the expertise Emcore has in optics and light, increased 116% year on year in the September quarter. This is the area where Emcore has the most potential as these new terrestrial triple junction solar cells have significant potential for massive growth  in sales.
CPV Consortium
ISFOC, Spain's Institute for Concentration Photovoltaic systems, incorporated in 'Institute  de Finanzas de Castilla La Mancha' and part of an overall group effort by University Politecnica de Madrid, last year signed a contract for the supply of 3MW of concentrated Solar Photovoltaic systems. Stage one of the tender involved 1.7MW of concentrated solar panels from Isofoton (700kW), Solfocus (500kW) and Concentrix (500kW). Companies supplying the cells were Azur, Spectrolab and Emcore. Stage 2 of a further 1.3MW was awarded to Emcore (300kW), Arima Eco (300kW), Spains Concentracion La Mancha S.L. (300kW) and Sol3g (400kW). The consortium is discussed on another of my pages, however the significance I see in the above contracts is as follows:
Firstly of the original supply contract Emcore was contracted to supply CPV equipment to either Isofoton or Concentrix. Secondly, they were then awarded a full contract to supply a further 300kW of a complete system. This means that after the intial tender was completed and equipment started to become available for testing, Emcores CPV cell which ISFOC would have been able to evaluate with actual cells as opposed to relying on data sheets and company literature, were then selected to supply a full system to the project. This means that ISFOC were satisfied enough to order more of the same cells from Emcore.
On 1st - 2nd of April in Madrid there is a Concentrated Photovoltaic Summit. On April the 3rd all parties will visit the ISFOC facilities to see the Concentrated Photovoltaic installations in action.
As well as what appear to be consortium members Solfocus, Spectrolab, Azur, Concentrix, Emcore, Sol3g, another name appears not just in the list of attendees, but also as a headline presenter - twice. Green and Gold Energy is presenting at 10:15am and again at 16:00. This collection of companies and respective scientific universities would only permit presentation by reputable presenters as to their product lines. The fact that GGE is presenting twice, indicates they do in fact have a genuine product and also a means to produce, sell and support this product line. Add in the fact that Emcore are also presenting at 17:30 and the only conclusion that can be reached about this is the relationship and product is real.
Of who it appears part of the CPV consortium, Emcore is one of the only publicly listed companies
It is worth reading up on the CPV consortium and associated companies as this collection of industrial majors appear set to change the face of solar photovoltaic electricity forever.
